The Maine Equal Pay Law Poster provides information on the Maine Equal Pay Law (Title 26, §628). The criteria described on the poster can aid an employee in determining whether pay disparity between him- or herself and an employee of the opposite sex is due to discrimination, or whether it is explicable by a cause valid under the law.

The poster also includes information on how to file an Equal Pay Complaint, and contains contact information for Maine Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Standards.

Under the law, an employer may not discriminate between employees in the same establishment on the basis of sex by paying wages to any employee in any occupation at a rate less than the rate at which the employer pays any employee of the opposite sex for comparable work on jobs with comparable requirements relating to skill, effort and responsibility. The wage disparity should only be a result of a seniority system, a merit increase system, or a difference in the shift or time of day worked.

Posting Requirement

The Maine Equal Pay Law Poster is not a required posting. Employers can display this poster in the workplace to inform workers of their rights under state law. The law applies to all employers doing business or operating within the State, including political subdivisions.
